This photograph from the 1940s, on the other hand, depicts a deep sea sponge diver in full gear as he climbs back into his fishing boat holding a natural sponge in his hand. It was taken in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

This final square-helmeted deep sea diver is from Robert M. Zimmerman's promotional material from the 1930s for his Chautauqua lecture “Adventuring on 'The Bottom Of The Sea'” . Showing him “prying in Davy Jones' Locker” Zimmerman's lecture promised that he would display “a dozen or more large cases of interesting material which he personally brought up from the ocean's floor”.
